Assalamualaikum peeps.
Nowadays people keep asking me why do I wear braces? They said my teeth was fine and I shouldn't wear braces. But some of them said that I might following the trend. Nope. I do have my own reason.
Growing up with crowded teeth always made me felt awkward smiling showing my teeth. I thought I need braces for my crowded teeth until one day I realized that I have tongue thrusting. Yup I have habit that called Tongue Thrusting. Tongue thrusting cause protrusion of my upper teeth.
During my annual appointment with dentist my mum started to think that I should have braces because my upper teeth keep protruding out. Even then I didn't immediately run to the dentist to get my braces on. I had some consultation with my cousins (and my dentist too)
Tongue thrusting? Have you heard about it? No? Okay. Let me explain what is tongue thrusting about. Some said that tongue thrusting is the biggest problem in Orthodontic but I'm not so sure about it.
Tongue thrusting is the abnormal habit of placing the tongue between the teeth before and during the act of swallowing. During a normal swallow, the tongue should be placed on the roof of the mouth and not between the teeth. During swallow tongue exert pressure surrounding structure of mouth that will push the teeth and bone forward and upward.
The result of thr tongue thrust is an open bite where the teeth don't touch. Tongue thrust can be solve by putting braces on your teeth BUT THE TONGUE THRUSTER ITSELF MUST CORRECTED THE HABIT.
WHY?
If the front teeth brought back into alignment but if the tongue thrust habit is not broken, the teeth may be moved back out after treatment.
I keep reminding myself to correct the habit as I don't want my teeth moved back out after the treatment. For me if I never corrected the habit, orthodontic treatment is sure to be negatively affected. What I do to correct my abnormal habit is I always exercise positioning my tongue during swallowing. I will make sure my tongue is on the correct position.
Enough for tongue thrusting. Stay tuned for the next post. I will update it soon. See ya! 😁
